The Marshgate Lane Greenway Access project is focused on the walking and cycling routes to the south of the London Stadium and Bobby Moore Academy Senior School over to Pudding Mill Lane. This project is a collaboration between London Legacy Development Corporation and London Borough of Newham.

This area is undergoing significant change, with many people already using local routes to travel to school, events, and homes in the area, and many more to come as developments at Pudding Mill Lane come forward. The project area has been highlighted in the recent Safer Places Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park Area Survey as being of concern in relation to safety for women, girls, and gender diverse people.

The objective of the project is to improve local connections and open space by improving the cycling and walking route between Pudding Mill Lane DLR station and Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, to make it easier for people get around and over the Greenway and under the railway. The project hopes to introduce features that will help improve sense of safety in the area for all users, particularly at the underpass beneath the railway.

Proposals

Proposals include:

1 Improved ramp to Greenway, ramp to be made wider and shallower to make it easier for all users to navigate.

2. Stairs integrated with proposed ramp to create more direct routes for users who are able to utilise.

3. Existing pedestrian crossing to be widened and upgraded to allow both pedestrians and cyclists to use.

4. Raised table over Red Rose Lane junction, and linked to upgraded pedestrian and cycle crossing over Marshgate Lane, to slow traffic speeds and improve safety. 

5. New pedestrian and cyclist crossing with raised table over Marshgate Lane to link to existing Greenway access ramp.

6. Improved lighting across site, including to road and pedestrian underpasses. 

7. Options for additional CCTV to compliment existing network. 

8. New art/wayfinding developed with local people, focusing on the pedestrian underpass, to help create a sense of place, direct users and improve perceptions of safety.

9. Planting and habitats to Greenway embankment to be reinstated on completion of works.

10. Potential for additional seating integrated as part of the ramp.

    Great idea to approve this as this path is now getting busy. With the ABBA Voyage and on West Ham event days, this path is often filled with pedestrians on foot, as well as cyclists. It would be GREAT if there was a clear primary path for pedestrains, and clear primary path for cyclists / accessible users. Sharing of a narrow path will be a pain point for both cyclists and pedestrians

    This looks good overall. The only concern is that the zig zag ramp can cause a lot of conflicts when there's lots of traffic. The shape is similar to the bridge across the A12 by Wallis Road.


    The tight turn leads to bikes to taking the widest possible line along the outside of the turn. It'd be ideal to have some kind of buffer at the end of the turns, or just to have a appropriately wide.

    Overall, I approve of the new plan. I commute to and from the View Tube on the Greenway, so use this section very regularly. Usually, I cycle, and the only concern I have is about how difficult the double turn on the step-free path will be when multiple bikes are going up/down it. I completely understand and support the need to make the path shallower for accessibility needs. I think there's space to still leave a more direct route up the hill for bikes, though. I recommend a secondary, steeper ramp be put in from the top of the stairs... Continue reading
